Daily physical activity may reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease and cognitive decline, even in people over the age of 80, a new study has suggested.
Neurological researchers from Rush University Medical Center were behind the study.
The results of our study indicate that all physical activities including exercise as well as other activities such as cooking, washing the dishes, and cleaning are associated with a reduced risk of Alzheimers disease, said Dr. Aron S. Buchman, lead author of the study and associate professor of neurological sciences at Rush.

ABSECON – TV Turn Off Week is designed to get students to take a healthy break from TV and other media and focus on activities that are more beneficial.
At the H. Ashton Marsh Elementary School, the emphasis is on physical activities, with teacher Douglas Scholder leading the way.
“We’re holding it here from Monday, April 30 to Sunday, May 6,” Scholder said Wednesday, May, 2. “It’s a schoolwide activity.”
This year, he said, the main event was a Turn Off TV scavenger hunt Monday, April...
Being physically active may help reduce one#146;s risk of developing Alzheimer#146;s disease, even in older patients, according to a study published online April 18 in Neurology.
The study is one of the first to look at a range of physical activities, instead of strictly focusing on exercise. #147;There is accumulating evidence to suggest that a whole range of late-life activity is important in maintaining cognitive ability,#148; said Aron S. Buchman, MD, associate professor of neurological sciences at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
Making any change in behaviour, such as starting a physical activity program, is significant and can be very challenging.
However, it’s never too late to start becoming physically active and to begin to feel some of the great benefits associated with exercise. At Bellarine Community Health, physical wellness programs are specifically designed and tailored for older adults.
Physiotherapist Liz Womersley is encouraging. “Being ‘too old’ or ‘too frail’ are not reasons to avoid physical activity. Most physical activities can be adjusted to accommodate older adults with a range of abilities and health problems.”
Some of the benefits...

Rather than sitting in homeroom, waiting for classes to begin, the students of Hampstead Elementary School will be preparing for the day with exercises and stretches led by faculty and staff over the morning announcements, said Ronnie Rebhan, physical education teacher at Hampstead Elementary.
“This daily activity will be the start to each school day during National Physical Education and Sport Week, held April 30 to May 1,” Rebhan said. “Exercise promotes blood flow, which provides more oxygen to the brain and will translate into more alert learners starting their busy day.”
This will be the second year Hampstead Elementary has been a part of Sport Week,...
Tuesday, hundreds of kids from around the Grand Valley put down the video games, and headed out to Stoker Stadium to show off their athletic skills.
It was a packed house, as kids from 13 elementary schools participated in physical activities for the PE Jamboree. The event shares with the community what kids do in physical education classes, and how those activities lead to healthy lives.
Parents say PE is important for their kids to get out some of that pent up energy.
Its very important so they are getting their exercise, and playing with their friends and learning to get along with one another, parent Jasmine Balderas said at the event.
The theme this year was Olympic...
